Lake Living, a Northern Michigan Lifestyle

lake living

Michigan is the “Great Lakes State.” In addition to being surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, there are more than 11,000 inland lakes in the state. If you live in Michigan you are never farther away than 85 miles from one of the Great Lakes or six miles from an inland lake. Still most Michiganders spend their lives dreaming of lake living without moving forward and taking steps to make it a reality.

What do people give as their reason for relocating to Northern Michigan? To live a slower, more relaxing and family centered lifestyle. There are so many wonderful aspects to lake living. Here are some great reasons why people love lake living with two examples of where some of the best lake living in Michigan can be found.

A Variety of Activities

There are so many different ways to fully and generously enjoy lake life, from birding to boating, sunbathing to jet skiing. A lake offers tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding in the summer and skating and ice fishing in the winter. If you want an active lifestyle, lake living offers so many at-home choices beyond running or walking. It’s easy to stay fit when you can swim, canoe, and explore nature. Both exercise and the lapping sound of waves also have a calming effect on the mind and body, so lake living is great for relaxing, meditating and improving your physical and mental health.

Built-in Entertaining

Everyone wants to be at the lake, so if you have a lake house, your home will automatically be a destination place. It’s easy to throw a party at the lake because people love recreating on the water. All of the things you enjoy doing on the lake, you can do with your friends and family. And there’s nothing like a cookout with bonfire to make lasting memories with your loved ones.

There are many lakes that are known for their parties and entertainment. Torch Lake, Michigan’s own slice of the Caribbean, has crystal clear turquoise waters and a wonderful, white sandbar. Because of its natural beauty, the lake draws people from all over the world, including the rich and famous, but its clear, turquoise waters also offer a welcoming place for kids to play and learn to swim. You can even buy food on the lake at Dave’s Burger Barge if your family gets hungry after burning off the calories in Torch Lake!

Another destination lake is Lake Charlevoix. There is always something to do at Lake Charlevoix, but in July, during the Venetian Festival, the activity really ramps up. From Aquapalooza to Worship on the Water to street and boat parades to Kid’s Day activities to rich lineup of local and national musical talent, there’s something for everyone all week long. There is art to view and purchase, storytelling, and even a beauty pageant to watch or compete in.

Northern Michigan has many such festivals because Michiganders know how to appreciate good weather and summer’s warmth while it lasts. They don’t take it for granted. This is another reason living in Northern Michigan excels – all summer long is one long celebration, so if you need additional activities besides the one your lake offers, there is always another festival happening up and down the coast of Lake Michigan or at one of the smaller lakes.
