Frank Lloyd Wright famously coined the phrase ‘Form Follows Function’. In this case, form also followed location. The Point Betsie Cottage is crafted to look like the historical light house at Point Betsie north of Frankfurt, MI. Originally opened in 1858 it was one of the last lighthouses in Michigan to be automated, running for 106 years as a traditional ‘wicked’ lighthouse.
The lighthouse at Point Betsie and all of the ancillary buildings are distinct with red shingled roofs and white painted siding. Our recreation of this architecture required a blend of modern construction techniques and old-world craftsmanship. A strict adherence to the timeless look of the structure while also creating a highly functional family cottage shows location seamlessly merging with form and function.
